Used to be when I planned a novel it was all columns and notes in tiny notebooks that I would then lose, now my plans tend to look like this.
This is for a book that has been floating around in my hard drive for nearly five years, it’s called Empire December. I’ve a draft, and a real desire to finish it off. Still have the rest of the page to fill.
And these are part of my notes for A House in Arbitrary. Of course there’s still plenty of scrawl in notebooks, and scenes and notes on my computer – but, increasingly, these visuals help me construct my stories. I don’t think they improve my writing on a line by line level (I wish) but they give me a greater sense of the shape of the story, a loose guide to connections, and the rhythm of plot – whatever works, I say.
